Let’s be honest for a moment: There are a lot of us struggling right now. Some are struggling with things like a shift in work dynamics while working from home. Some are struggling because their job no longer exists. Some are struggling because, while their jobs are safe because they are deemed essential, it puts them on the front-lines of this pandemic.
Almost none of us were prepared for this new life, and for most of us, it has us questioning our sense of what is normal.
No matter how you are dealing (or not dealing) with the current situation, one thing is clear: we are definitely in a time of transition, and it seems like we’ve been moving towards this shift for some time now… albeit maybe not in this particular way.
The Spiritual Angle
Thursday of last week was the Full Moon. For those of you who are interested in such things, it was the Flower Moon, thus called because flowers bloom in May as a result of the April showers…
Yeah it’s really that simple.
It was also in Scorpio.
Now, I am relatively new to the study of Astrology, though I do know some things due to a much more in-depth study of Tarot. The court cards are often connected to their astrological counterparts. Scorpio is shown as the King of Cups. He is a brooding sort, a keeper of secrets who learns to keep his emotions hidden in order to help in business, though it is often by following his emotions that he is successful.
Through a guided meditation on the Full Moon, we focused on both the full moon energy and the Scorpio energy to look within to see what we were hiding from ourselves. The idea being that you could use this as introspection to initiate a transformation.
After all, we have the time for it at the moment.
Then, over the weekend, I learned that Saturn is turning retrograde and will be “going backwards” for a while.
Retrograde doesn’t literally mean that it changes direction and goes backwards, but rather that from our perspective and due to it’s orbit it appears to travel backwards in our skies.
The point is that when Saturn goes retrograde is almost like a test: “Nothing is worth having if it doesn’t take time and work.” Furthermore, it is beginning this retrograde in Aquarius which, according to the article I read, means a massive transformation is happening or about to happen.
I’d say that the CoronaVirus/Quarantine definitely fits!
Not that this is anything new…
It could be argued that this shift was coming for some time. Perhaps you believe that we humans are responsible for the care of the planet. Many indigenous cultures across the world hold that viewpoint, as well as many New Age/Wicca/Pagan people (yes I know they aren’t all in the same category, hence why I listed them all out instead of just lumping them under one title).
It could be argued that it is also stated in the Bible when God says that Adam shall be in charge of all the animals of the Earth, though most translations seem to suggest that Adam shall “rule over” the animals, which doesn’t exactly lean towards a balance like in most indigenous cultures. Furthermore, we could have a long discussion of how that particular quote (Genesis 1:28) combined with Darwinism was often used as justification for the subjugation of other people…
But that’s not the point of this post.
The point of this post is that the world is in transition and while most of us look at it only from the perspective of how it affects our individual lives, it is much, much more than that.
So, what is happening?
Even when this pandemic first started and they told us to self-quarantine, I knew that one of the major transformations would be the health of the planet. This current situation reads like the exposition section of a Solarpunk novel: “The people were all locked in their houses, hiding from the disease, and they were forced to learn to live sustainably…”
For those of you who don’t know, Solarpunk is a branch of speculative fiction that focuses on Green Living. Just as Cyberpunk is centered around technology and Steampunk is set around the steam engines of the Victorian Age, Solarpunk is centered around the idea that solar energy and green living will become the norm. Interestingly enough, apparently it cannot be Dystopian.
I don’t think that we are on the way to houses with grass roofs or an elimination of fossil fuel run cars, but I do think that we are going to learn to be a bit wiser about how we treat each other and the environment. Especially if the environment keeps improving because we are absent from it!
Kurt Vonnegut (to go back to one of the authors discussed last week) said in 2005, “We’re terrible animals, and I think that our planet’s immune system is trying to get rid of us, and it should.”
Obviously, that’s something of a
humorous terrifying stance given the current situation, but it illustrates that there have been people recognizing that we are hurting the planet for some time now.
Global warming, the increasing rate of extinction within the animal kingdom, the dying of the Great Coral Reef, El Nino… All of these things are relatively new problems (relative to the age of the Earth), and science agrees that we humans are primarily to blame for most of these issues.
Does that mean we brought this particular disease on ourselves? No. That’s not what I’m saying.
What I am saying is that some sort of change needed to happen, and perhaps the fact that the Earth is healing itself while we are shut away behind closed doors might be one of the positives of the situation.
So what can you do?
Personally, I found myself really connecting with my spirituality. The time away from most people has given me an opportunity to really reflect on who I am, what I believe, and what I am willing to accept in my life.
My personal Instagram page includes my daily Oracle Reading. Unlike Tarot (which I already mentioned), oracle cards basically give you a task or goal to focus on for your own growth. Sometimes it’s things like reflecting on past hurts and how to heal from those. Other times, it’s a directive like “be adaptable.” The cards I use are based on feminine divine archetypes from multiple faiths and mythologies: Isis, Danu, Artemis, Aphrodite, Freya, Mary Magdalene and so many more!
While, it may seem silly to some, it’s become an important part of my day, and it was because of the introspection gained through my oracle readings that I was able to finally feel confident enough to come back to this blog.
If you’re not ready to jump onto the spiritual (or “hippie dippie” as my mother might say) bandwagon, there are more practical ways to transform yourself:
- Start a new workout regimen
- Try a new diet
- Start a hobby
- Connect with your elders (I’m working with my grandmother to collect all the family recipes and create a family cookbook that can be added to as the family grows and expands)
- Start an online business! There are tons of workshops out there right now trying to help people find a side hustle while the job market is uncertain for an indefinite amount of time.
Whatever you decide to do, make sure it brings you a sense of joy or peace in these turbulent times.
I know that my post took a dark edge for a
moment while there, but I do feel very strongly that all the wild things that are happening in 2020 stem in some way from us being out of balance as a society. Whether that’s a spiritual balance, a balance with nature, a balance among different cultures, or a combination of all those, I couldn’t tell you, but we’ve been out of balance for a while, and now is the time to find that balance again.
Even if it’s just finding the balance within yourself at the moment, use this time, embrace the transformation, and make something a little bit better about the world/your life/reality/whatever!
